Build, buy, or extend? Choosing an approach to ERP
Custom isn't always right, and packaged isn't always cheaper. A practical way to decide.
When an organization outgrows spreadsheets and disconnected tools, the ERP question arrives. There are three realistic paths: adopt a packaged system, build a custom one, or extend what you already have.
Buy when your processes are standard
Accounting, payroll and standard inventory processes are well served by mature products. If your process matches the product's assumptions, buying is usually faster and cheaper to maintain.
Build where the process is your advantage
If the way you operate is what differentiates you — or packaged tools require constant workarounds — custom modules let the system follow the business instead of the reverse.
Extend when you're mostly there
Often the best answer is hybrid: keep a proven core, and build custom workflows, portals and integrations around it. This limits risk while fixing the gaps people feel every day.
Whichever path you take, invest in the data model and integration layer. They outlast any individual application.
